The Centro Nacional de Inteligencia (CNI), under the Ministry of Defence, is present both in Spain and in other States in which Spain has economic, political or security-related interests.
Everything related to the activities of the CNI, its organization and internal structure, means and procedures, personnel, facilities, databases, sources of information, as well as any information or data that may reveal details on the aforementioned, constitutes information classified as secret.
Secretary of State director
Esperanza Casteleiro Llamazares was appointed Secretary of State Director of the National Intelligence Centre on 10 May 2022.
Ms Esperanza Casteleiro has spent almost her entire professional life in the Spanish Intelligence Service, first in the CESID and then in the CNI, where she has held several important positions, including that of secretary general between 2004 and 2008. In June 2018, she was appointed Director of the Cabinet of the Minister of Defence, Margarita Robles, and was subsequently appointed Secretary of State for Defence on 1 July 2020, a position she held until May 2022, when she was appointed Secretary of State Director of the CNI.
Mr Arturo Relanzón Sánchez-Gabriel was appointed secretary general of the Centro Nacional de Inteligencia on 18 February 2020.
Mr Arturo Relanzón joined the CESID in February 1989 from the Army; he held several positions as a CNI representative abroad and was a member of operational and Intelligence units.
